RECIPE CARDS
The best family secrets are covered in spaghetti sauce.
While my grandparents argue over when to start boiling the water for Christmas ravioli, and the rest of the family sits around the charcuterie board and dips cheesy bread into homemade sauce, my job as one of the “kids” in the family is to set the table. And this, of course, calls upon my job as a designer: to make sure it has some sort of wow factor.
Enter the Discordia Family recipe cards. Part wow factor, part selfish plea to get my Nana to write down any and every family recipe for me. Each holiday, it is something new. From the homemade sauce, to crescia, cassadaties, and other Italian dishes that I’m pretty sure are named in our own family slang — Googling not recommended.
The ravioli rolling pin is the staple to our family’s homemade Christmas ravioli, and therefore, it’s the star of the recipe card show. On Christmas Eve, we have a not-so-traditional version of a seven-fish dinner, where white fish, squid, scallops, shrimp, and smelt are coated in herbs and olive oil then broiled until you can’t wash the smell off of your jacket. These traditions are the inspiration for the card’s custom illustrations.
